Caring for Aging Parents Without Burning Out

Caregiving can involve love, gratitude, conflict, finances, exhaustion and difficult health decisions at once. Sustainable care requires boundaries and practical support.

Start the conversation

List the person's actual needs: medication, appointments, meals, mobility, finances, companionship and decision-making. Separate tasks that require professional skills from those family can safely help with.

Practical next steps

  1. Ask the older adult what they want and can decide for themselves. Respect autonomy as much as possible instead of making decisions about them without them.
  2. Create a shared appointment and medication record, but protect health information and obtain consent where appropriate.
  3. Contact the Eldercare Locator for local support options, and ask medical providers about social workers, home-care services and respite possibilities.
  4. Make a caregiver plan: who can give you a break, what signs mean you need more help, and how to manage your own sleep, work and relationships.

Discuss and respond

What task is essential, what can be delegated, and what support would make caregiving safer next month?

Important: Medical, legal guardianship and financial decisions require qualified advice; do not use general religious counsel as a substitute.
