Finding Recovery Support for Yourself or Someone You Love

Substance-use problems call for compassion, evidence-based care and sustained support—not shame or secret promises of instant cures.

Start the conversation

If someone has overdosed, is unconscious, has trouble breathing, or is in immediate danger, call emergency services. A ministry cannot provide emergency medical treatment.

Practical next steps

  1. Ask the person what kind of help they are willing to consider; use calm, concrete observations instead of diagnosing or issuing moral verdicts.
  2. Search FindTreatment.gov or contact SAMHSA's national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP for options. Ask providers about insurance, costs, location, medications, and the type of treatment offered.
  3. For alcohol or sedative withdrawal, do not assume stopping abruptly at home is safe. Some withdrawals can be medically dangerous; seek clinical guidance.
  4. Support is easier to sustain when it includes practical transportation, check-ins, trusted community, relapse planning, and boundaries that protect everyone involved.

Discuss and respond

What specific help could be offered today without controlling the other person: a ride, a treatment call, a safe conversation, or child care?

Important: Recovery and detoxification are health matters. Do not replace medical treatment or prescribed medication with religious promises.
