How to Lead a 45-Minute Bible Discussion

A worthwhile Bible group does not require a polished speech. A clear passage, good questions, room for disagreement and an actionable ending are usually more important.

Start the conversation

Select one passage rather than five unrelated verses. Read it in advance, identify the literary context, and decide the one question your gathering should genuinely explore.

Practical next steps

  1. Minutes 0-5: welcome people, explain the passage, and establish that interruptions, pressure and mocking are not acceptable.
  2. Minutes 5-15: read the passage aloud twice, perhaps in two translations. Ask participants to describe what is actually happening before offering applications.
  3. Minutes 15-35: ask about the author, audience, difficult words and the passage's argument. Invite evidence from the text; distinguish interpretations without forcing false agreement.
  4. Minutes 35-45: invite a specific next step, optional prayer and a reminder that personal stories should not be shared outside the group without permission.

Read Scripture with the group

Discuss and respond

What two open questions could invite genuine observation rather than simply the answer you expect?

Important: Leaders should defer to trained professionals for disclosures of abuse, imminent safety risk, or clinical concerns.
