Bible Translation and Word-Study Worksheet

Test the effect of translation choices without claiming a secret meaning from one dictionary entry.

Intended for: Bible students and teachers exploring Hebrew and Greek tools

Private by design: The editable boxes stay in this browser. Nothing is submitted or saved to the website. Do not enter actual confidential pastoral, financial, medical, abuse, or child-identifying information; use fictional examples. Close or refresh this page and the unsaved notes disappear.

How to work through this worksheet

Use translations and source tools you have lawful access to quote. Compare grammar, audience and contextual usage. A concordance identifier is an index, not a complete translation or a proof of fluent expertise.

Read Scripture in context

Open the surrounding chapter and compare the passage's context. Scripture links open in a new tab so your worksheet remains available.

Work through the questions

1. Passage and historical setting

Book, verse boundaries, speaker and argument.

2. Translation A — citation and wording choices

Record the edition and the words that matter to your question.

3. Translation B — citation and differences

Compare a responsibly licensed or public-domain edition.

4. Original-language research limits

Identify any lexicon, grammar, manuscript or Strong's source and what it cannot prove.

5. Possible reasons for differences

Grammar, semantic range, manuscript base, idiom or readability.

6. Main meaning supported by context

What appears stable across translations? Which details remain debated?

7. A claim I should not make

Identify a sensational or simplistic word-study inference to avoid.

8. How I would explain this to a newcomer

Offer a clear explanation and source citation without pretending to have expertise I lack.

Practical review exercise

Compare two responsibly used versions of one passage and write a 400-word explanation distinguishing text, translation and interpretation.

Limits and safeguarding

Do not copy entire modern Bible versions or unlicensed scholarly apparatus.
