WEEK 5 OF 6 · FACILITATOR'S SHEET
Separate spiritual trust from financial controls and create a framework for fair leadership decisions.
Learning goal: Participants can identify restricted funds, conflicts of interest, independent review and clear donor communication.
Use entirely fictional numbers, donors and vendors. Do not solicit participants' private finances, bank account details or restricted-gift records in an open class. A church's real legal and financial duties depend on its governing documents and jurisdiction. A class discussion should never decide whether an actual person has committed fraud or whether a gift is deductible.
| Time | Activity | What the facilitator does |
|---|---|---|
| 0–10 minutes | Start with stewardship and transparency | Read the texts and ask why an organization needs both moral intentions and verification. Distinguish confidence in a leader from the right to inspect the handling of entrusted resources. |
| 10–25 minutes | Build a sample budget | Create fictional categories for income, restricted gifts, safeguarding, outreach and reserves. Ask what could go wrong if spending approval, accounting and bank reconciliation are controlled by one person. |
| 25–40 minutes | Discuss a related-party payment | Use the academy case of a board member's relative receiving a ministry payment. Separate established facts from accusations, and list records an independent review should preserve. |
| 40–55 minutes | Create a simple controls sheet | List how donations are acknowledged, restricted money tracked, vendor conflicts disclosed and records reviewed by people with suitable independence. |
| 55–65 minutes | Draft a fair donor update | Write a sample communication stating known facts, what is still being investigated and how corrections will be handled. Avoid unfounded allegations and promises that all donations are tax-deductible. |
Complete the fictional Church Financial Controls worksheet and prepare a brief independent-review charter. Have a qualified treasurer or lawyer evaluate any real implementation rather than copying the classroom example directly.
The class provides neither legal nor accounting advice. Make no claim of nonprofit qualification, charitable tax deductibility or regulatory authorization unless verified.
