Genesis 25:21Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.Genesis 25:23and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”Genesis 25:24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.Genesis 25:25The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau.Genesis 25:26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.Genesis 25:29One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.Genesis 25:30He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.)Genesis 25:31“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied.Genesis 25:32“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”Genesis 25:33“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright.Genesis 25:34Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.Genesis 27:1When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,” Esau replied.Genesis 27:2“Look,” said Isaac, “I am now old, and I do not know the day of my death.Genesis 27:3Take your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out into the field to hunt some game for me.Genesis 27:4Then prepare a tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I may bless you before I die.”Genesis 27:5Now Rebekah was listening to what Isaac told his son Esau. So when Esau went into the field to hunt game and bring it back,Genesis 27:6Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I overheard your father saying to your brother Esau,Genesis 27:7‘Bring me some game and prepare me a tasty dish to eat, so that I may bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’Genesis 27:8Now, my son, listen to my voice and do exactly as I tell you.Genesis 27:9Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so that I can make them into a tasty dish for your father—the kind he loves.Genesis 27:10Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.”Genesis 27:11Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am smooth-skinned.Genesis 27:12What if my father touches me? Then I would be revealed to him as a deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a curse rather than a blessing.”Genesis 27:13His mother replied, “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”Genesis 27:14So Jacob went and got two goats and brought them to his mother, who made the tasty food his father loved.Genesis 27:15And Rebekah took the finest clothes in the house that belonged to her older son Esau, and she put them on her younger son Jacob.Genesis 27:16She also put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.Genesis 27:17Then she handed her son Jacob the tasty food and bread she had made.Genesis 27:18So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.” “Here I am!” he answered. “Which one are you, my son?”Genesis 27:19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may bless me.”Genesis 27:20But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.Genesis 27:21Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau, or not?”Genesis 27:22So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”Genesis 27:23Isaac did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.Genesis 27:24Again he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”Genesis 27:25“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he ate; then he brought him wine, and he drank.Genesis 27:26Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.”Genesis 27:27So he came near and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and said: “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.Genesis 27:28May God give to you the dew of heaven and the richness of the earth—an abundance of grain and new wine.Genesis 27:29May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”Genesis 27:41Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”Genesis 27:42When the words of her older son Esau were relayed to Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told him, “Look, your brother Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you.Genesis 27:43So now, my son, obey my voice and flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.Genesis 27:44Stay with him for a while, until your brother’s fury subsides—Genesis 27:45until your brother’s rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”Genesis 27:46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a Hittite wife from among them, what good is my life?”Genesis 28:1So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” he commanded.Genesis 28:2“Go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel, and take a wife from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.Genesis 28:3May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.Genesis 28:4And may He give the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants, so that you may possess the land where you dwell as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”Genesis 28:5So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.Genesis 28:10Meanwhile Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.Genesis 28:11On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.Genesis 28:12And Jacob had a dream about a ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down the ladder.Genesis 28:13And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.Genesis 28:14Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and east and north and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.Genesis 28:15Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”Genesis 28:16When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”Genesis 28:17And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”Genesis 28:18Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a pillar.
