What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
Jesus used the words “born again” in His conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. He was not describing a religious makeover. He was talking about a new life that begins with God.
It starts with an honest view of ourselves.
Christianity does not begin by saying that some people are good enough and some people are not. Scripture says all of us fall short of God’s holiness. Sin is more than a list of spectacular failures; it includes the selfishness, pride, dishonesty, cruelty, indifference, and rebellion that separate human beings from the God who made us. We cannot repair that separation simply by becoming a little more religious.
That can sound like bad news until we understand why the gospel is called good news. God did not wait for us to become worthy of Him. The Christian message is that God acted first.
Jesus Christ is at the center, not our performance.
The New Testament presents Jesus as the Son of God who entered human history, lived without sin, died on the cross, and rose from the dead. Christians believe His death was not an accident or merely an example of courage. Christ gave Himself for sinners, and His resurrection declares that death and sin do not get the final word.
Salvation therefore is received as grace. Ephesians 2:8–9 says we are saved by grace through faith, not by works we can boast about. Good works matter, but they are the fruit of a changed life, not the price we pay to purchase one.
Repentance and faith are real responses.
To repent is to turn—to stop defending our sin and turn toward God. Faith is more than agreeing that Jesus existed. It is entrusting ourselves to Christ: believing who He is, relying on what He has done, and beginning to follow Him. Nobody does that because they have already cleaned themselves up. We come because we need mercy.
A prayer does not save somebody because it contains the right magic words. But prayer can be the honest expression of faith. You can tell God plainly that you know you have sinned, that you need His forgiveness, that you believe Jesus died and rose again, and that you are placing your trust in Christ. God is not impressed by religious vocabulary; He knows whether we are being honest.
Being born again is a beginning.
Coming to Christ does not mean every old habit disappears overnight or that every question is instantly answered. It means your life now belongs to Him. You begin learning Scripture, praying, turning away from sin, growing in love, and living in fellowship with other believers. When you fail, you do not hide from God as though grace has expired. You confess it, receive correction, and keep following Christ.
