Luke 7:16A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”Luke 7:17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.Luke 7:18Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.Luke 7:19So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”Luke 7:20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’”Luke 7:21At that very hour Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.Luke 7:22So He replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.Luke 7:23Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”Luke 7:24After John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?Luke 7:25Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.Luke 7:26What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.Luke 7:27This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’Luke 7:28I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”Luke 7:29All the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. For they had received the baptism of John.Luke 7:30But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.Luke 7:31“To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like?Luke 7:32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’Luke 7:33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’Luke 7:34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’Luke 7:35But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”Luke 7:36Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.Luke 7:37When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.Luke 7:38As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.Luke 7:39When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a sinner!”Luke 7:40But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he said.Luke 7:41“Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.Luke 7:42When they were unable to repay him, he forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”Luke 7:43“I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.Luke 7:44And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.Luke 7:45You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived.Luke 7:46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.Luke 7:47Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”Luke 7:48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”Luke 7:49But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”Luke 7:50And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”Luke 8:1Soon afterward, Jesus traveled from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him,Luke 8:2as well as some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,Luke 8:3Joanna the wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.Luke 8:4While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, He told them this parable:Luke 8:5“A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.Luke 8:6Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.Luke 8:7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings.Luke 8:8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up and produced a crop—a hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”Luke 8:9Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.Luke 8:10He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’Luke 8:11Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.Luke 8:12The seeds along the path are those who hear, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.Luke 8:13The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in the time of testing, they fall away.Luke 8:14The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature.Luke 8:15But the seeds on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, cling to it, and by persevering produce a crop.Luke 8:16No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.Luke 8:17For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.Luke 8:18Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”Luke 8:19Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.Luke 8:20He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”Luke 8:21But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”Luke 8:22One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So He got into a boat with them and set out.Luke 8:23As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.Luke 8:24The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and all was calm.Luke 8:25“Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
