Deuteronomy 20:1When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.Deuteronomy 20:2It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,Deuteronomy 20:3and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;Deuteronomy 20:4for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”Deuteronomy 20:5The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Pursue them quickly; for you will overtake them.”Joshua 2:6But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.Joshua 2:7The men pursued them the way to the Jordan to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.Joshua 2:8Before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof;Joshua 2:9and she said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.Joshua 2:10For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.Joshua 2:11As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.Joshua 2:12Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;Joshua 2:13and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”Joshua 2:14The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”Joshua 2:15Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.Joshua 2:16She said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way.”Joshua 2:17The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us to swear.Joshua 2:18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.Joshua 2:19It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.Joshua 2:20But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.”Joshua 2:21She said, “According to your words, so be it.” She sent them away, and they departed. She tied the scarlet line in the window.Joshua 2:22They went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn’t find them.Joshua 2:23Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.Joshua 2:24They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has delivered into our hands all the land. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”Joshua 6:6Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh.”Joshua 6:7They said to the people, “Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh’s ark.”Joshua 6:13The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Yahweh went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh. The trumpets sounded as they went.Joshua 7:2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.Joshua 7:3They returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Don’t let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them.”Joshua 8:2You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except its spoil and its livestock, you shall take for a plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”Joshua 8:3So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.Joshua 8:4He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.Joshua 8:5I, and all the people who are with me, will approach to the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.Joshua 8:6They will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,Joshua 8:7and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.Joshua 8:8It shall be, when you have seized on the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the word of Yahweh. Behold, I have commanded you.”Joshua 8:9Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.Joshua 8:10Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.Joshua 8:11All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.Joshua 8:12He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.Joshua 8:13So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.Joshua 8:14It happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.Joshua 8:15Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.Joshua 8:16All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.Joshua 8:17There was not a man left in Ai or Beth El who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.Joshua 8:18Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.Joshua 8:19The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.Joshua 8:20When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.Joshua 8:21When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed the men of Ai.
