Ruth 4:17The neighbor women said, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, the father of David.1 Samuel 16:1Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”1 Samuel 16:2“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The LORD answered, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’1 Samuel 16:3Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate.”1 Samuel 16:4So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”1 Samuel 16:5“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.1 Samuel 16:6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.”1 Samuel 16:7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”1 Samuel 16:8Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”1 Samuel 16:9Next Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”1 Samuel 16:10Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”1 Samuel 16:11And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” “Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”1 Samuel 16:12So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.”1 Samuel 16:13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.1 Samuel 16:19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”1 Samuel 16:20And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them to Saul with his son David.1 Samuel 16:21When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul loved him very much, and David became his armor-bearer.1 Samuel 16:22Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”1 Samuel 16:23And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would pick up his harp and play. Then Saul would find relief and feel better, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.1 Samuel 17:12Now David was the son of a man named Jesse, an Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah who had eight sons. And in the days of Saul, Jesse was old and well along in years.1 Samuel 17:13The three older sons of Jesse had followed Saul into battle: The firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.1 Samuel 17:14And David was the youngest. The three oldest had followed Saul,1 Samuel 17:15but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.1 Samuel 17:16For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening to take his stand.1 Samuel 17:17One day Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.1 Samuel 17:18Take also these ten portions of cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the welfare of your brothers and bring back an assurance from them.1 Samuel 17:19They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”1 Samuel 17:20So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as Jesse had instructed him. He reached the camp as the army was marching out to its position and shouting the battle cry.1 Samuel 17:21And Israel and the Philistines arrayed in formation against each other.1 Samuel 17:22Then David left his supplies in the care of the quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.1 Samuel 17:23And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the champion named Goliath, the Philistine from Gath, came forward from the ranks of the Philistines and shouted his usual words, which David also heard.1 Samuel 17:24When all the men of Israel saw Goliath, they fled from him in great fear.1 Samuel 17:25Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out to defy Israel? To the man who kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his father’s house from taxation in Israel.”1 Samuel 17:26David asked the men who were standing with him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”1 Samuel 17:27The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”1 Samuel 17:28Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”1 Samuel 22:3From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab, where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I learn what God will do for me.”1 Samuel 22:4So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.1 Chronicles 2:13Jesse was the father of Eliab his firstborn; Abinadab was born second, Shimea third,1 Chronicles 2:14Nethanel fourth, Raddai fifth,1 Chronicles 2:15Ozem sixth, and David seventh.1 Chronicles 2:16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail.
