Matthew 16:1Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.Matthew 16:2But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’Matthew 16:3and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times.Matthew 16:4A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.Matthew 16:5When they crossed to the other side, the disciples forgot to take bread.Matthew 16:6“Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”Matthew 16:7They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.”Matthew 16:8Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you debating among yourselves about having no bread?Matthew 16:9Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?Matthew 16:10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?Matthew 16:11How do you not understand that I was not telling you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”Matthew 16:12Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.Matthew 16:15“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”Matthew 16:16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”Matthew 16:20Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.Matthew 16:21From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.Matthew 16:22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!”Matthew 16:23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”Matthew 16:24Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.Matthew 16:25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.Matthew 16:26What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?Matthew 16:27For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.Matthew 16:28Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”Matthew 17:1After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.Matthew 17:2There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.Matthew 17:3Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus.Matthew 17:4Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”Matthew 17:5While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”Matthew 17:6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown in terror.Matthew 17:7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” He said. “Do not be afraid.”Matthew 17:8And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.Matthew 17:9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”Matthew 17:10The disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”Matthew 17:11Jesus replied, “Elijah does indeed come, and he will restore all things.Matthew 17:12But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.”Matthew 17:13Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to them about John the Baptist.Matthew 17:14When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus and knelt before Him.Matthew 17:15“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.Matthew 17:16I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.”Matthew 17:17“O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.”Matthew 17:18Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.Matthew 17:19Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”Matthew 17:20“Because you have so little faith,” He answered. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”Matthew 17:21Matthew 17:22When they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.Matthew 17:23They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised to life.” And the disciples were deeply grieved.Matthew 17:24After they had arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your Teacher pay the two drachmas?”Matthew 17:25“Yes,” he answered. When Peter entered the house, Jesus preempted him. “What do you think, Simon?” He asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs and taxes: from their own sons, or from others?”Matthew 17:26“From others,” Peter answered. “Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him.Matthew 17:27“But so that we may not offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for My tax and yours.”Matthew 18:1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”Matthew 18:2Jesus invited a little child to stand among them.Matthew 18:3“Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 18:4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 18:5And whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me.Matthew 18:6But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.Matthew 18:7Woe to the world for the causes of sin. These stumbling blocks must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!Matthew 18:8If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than to have two hands and two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.Matthew 18:9And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.Matthew 18:10See that you do not look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father in heaven.
