John 18:13They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.John 18:14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.John 18:15Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.John 18:16But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.John 18:17At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.John 18:18Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.John 18:19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.John 18:20“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.John 18:21Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”John 18:22When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”John 18:23Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”John 18:24Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.John 18:25Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”John 18:26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”John 18:27Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.John 18:28Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.John 18:29So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”John 18:30“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”John 18:31“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.John 18:32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.John 18:33Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”John 18:34“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”John 18:35“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”John 18:36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”John 18:37“Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”John 18:38“What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.John 18:39But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”John 18:40“Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)Acts 5:17Then the high priest and all his associates, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They went outActs 5:18and arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.Acts 5:19But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out, saying,Acts 5:20“Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”Acts 5:21At daybreak the apostles entered the temple courts as they had been told and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.Acts 5:22But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they returned with the report:Acts 5:23“We found the jail securely locked, with the guards posted at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”Acts 5:24When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this account, they were perplexed as to what was happening.Acts 5:25Then someone came in and announced, “Look, the men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people!”Acts 5:26At that point, the captain went with the officers and brought the apostles—but not by force, for fear the people would stone them.Acts 5:27They brought them in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, where the high priest interrogated them.Acts 5:28“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.”Acts 5:29But Peter and the other apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men.Acts 5:30The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging Him on a tree.Acts 5:31God exalted Him to His right hand as Prince and Savior, in order to grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.Acts 5:32We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”Acts 5:33When the Council members heard this, they were enraged, and they resolved to put the apostles to death.Acts 5:34But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a short time.Acts 5:35“Men of Israel,” he said, “consider carefully what you are about to do to these men.Acts 5:36Some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.Acts 5:37After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and drew away people after him. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered.Acts 5:38So in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin, it will fail.Acts 5:39But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God.”Acts 5:40At this, they yielded to Gamaliel. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.Acts 5:41The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.Acts 5:42Every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.Acts 12:3And seeing that this pleased the Jews, Herod proceeded to seize Peter during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.Acts 12:4He arrested him and put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out to the people after the Passover.Acts 12:5So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was fervently praying to God for him.Acts 12:6On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison.Acts 12:7Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists.Acts 12:8“Get dressed and put on your sandals,” said the angel. Peter did so, and the angel told him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”
