Judges 8:1Then the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, “Why have you done this to us? Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they contended with him violently.Judges 8:2But Gideon answered them, “Now what have I accomplished compared to you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer?Judges 8:3God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian, into your hand. What was I able to do compared to you?” When he had said this, their anger against him subsided.1 Samuel 10:27But some worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” So they despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul remained silent about it.1 Samuel 11:7He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they came out together as one man.1 Samuel 11:12Then the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not reign over us? Bring those men here so we can kill them!”1 Samuel 11:13But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”1 Samuel 11:14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingship there.”1 Samuel 11:15So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.1 Samuel 25:18Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five butchered sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs. She loaded them on donkeys1 Samuel 25:19and said to her young men, “Go ahead of me. I will be right behind you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.1 Samuel 25:20As Abigail came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.1 Samuel 25:21Now David had just said, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.1 Samuel 25:22May God punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one male belonging to Nabal survive until morning.”1 Samuel 25:23When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey, fell facedown, and bowed before him.1 Samuel 25:24She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.1 Samuel 25:25My lord should pay no attention to this scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.1 Samuel 25:26Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, since the LORD has held you back from bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand, may your enemies and those who seek harm for my lord be like Nabal.1 Samuel 25:27Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.1 Samuel 25:28Please forgive your servant’s offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.1 Samuel 25:29And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the bundle of the living. But He shall fling away the lives of your enemies like stones from a sling.1 Samuel 25:30When the LORD has done for my lord all the good He promised, and when He has appointed you ruler over Israel,1 Samuel 25:31then my lord will have no remorse or guilt of conscience over needless bloodshed and revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your servant.”1 Samuel 25:32Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me this day!1 Samuel 25:33Blessed is your discernment, and blessed are you, because today you kept me from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.1 Samuel 25:34Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”1 Samuel 25:35Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have heeded your voice and granted your request.”1 Samuel 25:36When Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.1 Samuel 25:37In the morning when Nabal was sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him, and he became like a stone.2 Samuel 3:28Afterward, David heard about this and said, “I and my kingdom are forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.2 Samuel 3:29May it whirl over the head of Joab and over the entire house of his father, and may the house of Joab never be without one having a discharge or skin disease, or one who leans on a staff or falls by the sword or lacks food.”2 Samuel 3:30(Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)2 Samuel 3:31Then David ordered Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral bier.2 Samuel 3:32When they buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb, and all the people wept.2 Samuel 3:33And the king sang this lament for Abner: “Should Abner die the death of a fool?2 Samuel 3:34Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people wept over him even more.2 Samuel 3:35Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”2 Samuel 3:36All the people took note and were pleased. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.2 Samuel 3:37So on that day all the troops and all Israel were convinced that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.2 Samuel 14:1Now Joab son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart longed for Absalom.2 Samuel 14:2So Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a mourner; put on clothes for mourning and do not anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has mourned for the dead a long time.2 Samuel 14:3Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And Joab put the words in her mouth.2 Samuel 14:4When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell facedown in homage and said, “Help me, O king!”2 Samuel 14:5“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.2 Samuel 14:6And your maidservant had two sons who were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the other and killed him.2 Samuel 14:7Now the whole clan has risen up against your maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would extinguish my one remaining ember by not preserving my husband’s name or posterity on the earth.”2 Samuel 14:8“Go home,” the king said to the woman, “and I will give orders on your behalf.”2 Samuel 14:9But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king, may any blame be on me and on my father’s house, and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”2 Samuel 14:10“If anyone speaks to you,” said the king, “bring him to me, and he will not trouble you again!”2 Samuel 14:11“Please,” she replied, “may the king invoke the LORD your God to prevent the avenger of blood from increasing the devastation, so that my son may not be destroyed!” “As surely as the LORD lives,” he vowed, “not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.”2 Samuel 14:12Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak a word to my lord the king?” “Speak,” he replied.2 Samuel 14:13The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?2 Samuel 14:14For we will surely die and be like water poured out on the ground, which cannot be recovered. Yet God does not take away a life, but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him.2 Samuel 14:15Now therefore, I have come to present this matter to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the request of his maidservant.2 Samuel 14:16For the king will hear and deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man who would cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’2 Samuel 14:17And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is able to discern good and evil, just like the angel of God. May the LORD your God be with you.’”2 Samuel 14:18Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.2 Samuel 14:19So the king asked, “Is the hand of Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says. Yes, your servant Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your maidservant exactly what to say.2 Samuel 14:20Joab your servant has done this to bring about this change of affairs, but my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”2 Samuel 14:21Then the king said to Joab, “I hereby grant this request. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.”
