Genesis 38:6Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.Genesis 38:7Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh. Yahweh killed him.Genesis 38:8Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up seed to your brother.”Genesis 38:9Onan knew that the seed wouldn’t be his; and it happened, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.Genesis 38:10The thing which he did was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he killed him also.Genesis 38:11Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.Genesis 38:12After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.Genesis 38:13It was told Tamar, saying, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”Genesis 38:14She took off of her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.Genesis 38:15When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.Genesis 38:16He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”Genesis 38:17He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”Genesis 38:18He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.Genesis 38:19She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.Genesis 38:20Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.Genesis 38:21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”Genesis 38:22He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”Genesis 38:23Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”Genesis 38:24It happened about three months later, that it was told Judah, saying, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute; and moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burnt.”Ruth 4:12Let your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which Yahweh shall give you of this young woman.”2 Samuel 13:1It happened after this, that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.2 Samuel 13:2Amnon was so troubled that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her.2 Samuel 13:3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.2 Samuel 13:4He said to him, “Why, son of the king, are you so sad from day to day? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”2 Samuel 13:5Jonadab said to him, “Lay down on your bed, and pretend to be sick. When your father comes to see you, tell him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.’”2 Samuel 13:6So Amnon lay down and faked being sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”2 Samuel 13:7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.”2 Samuel 13:8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. She took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.2 Samuel 13:9She took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. Amnon said, “Have all men leave me.” Every man went out from him.2 Samuel 13:10Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the room, that I may eat from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother.2 Samuel 13:11When she had brought them near to him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister!”2 Samuel 13:12She answered him, “No, my brother, do not force me! For no such thing ought to be done in Israel. Don’t you do this folly.2 Samuel 13:13I, where would I carry my shame? And as for you, you will be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you.”2 Samuel 13:14However he would not listen to her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.2 Samuel 13:15Then Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone!”2 Samuel 13:16She said to him, “Not so, because this great wrong in sending me away is worse than the other that you did to me!” But he would not listen to her.2 Samuel 13:17Then he called his servant who ministered to him, and said, “Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.”2 Samuel 13:18She had a garment of various colors on her; for with such robes were the king’s daughters who were virgins dressed. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.2 Samuel 13:19Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her garment of various colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.2 Samuel 13:20Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.2 Samuel 13:21But when king David heard of all these things, he was very angry.2 Samuel 13:22Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.2 Samuel 13:23It happened after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal Hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.2 Samuel 13:24Absalom came to the king, and said, “See now, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.”2 Samuel 13:25The king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him; however he would not go, but blessed him.2 Samuel 13:26Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” The king said to him, “Why should he go with you?”2 Samuel 13:27But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.2 Samuel 13:28Absalom commanded his servants, saying, “Mark now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant!”2 Samuel 13:29The servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded.
