Why was it made?
To revise the ASV into contemporary literary English while retaining continuity with the KJV tradition.
How did it develop?
The RSV New Testament appeared in 1946 and the complete Bible in 1952. It became a major twentieth-century English Bible and later stood behind the NRSV and, through revision, the ESV.
