ALMIGHTY and everlasting GOD, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee the GOD of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness, through JESUS CHRIST our LORD. TURN thou us, O good LORD, and so shall we be turned. Be favourable, O LORD, be favourable to thy people, who turn to thee in weeping, fasting and praying; for thou art a merciful GOD, full of compassion, long-suffering, and of great pity. Thou sparest, when we deserve punishment, and in thy wrath thinkest upon mercy. Spare thy people, good LORD, spare them, and let not thine heritage be brought to confusion. LORD, we are vile, conceiv’d in sin, And born unholy and unclean; Sprung from the man, whose guilty fall Corrupts the race, and taints us all.
Soon as we draw our infant breath, The seeds of sin grow up for death; Thy law demands a perfect heart, But we’re defil’d in ev’ry part.
Behold, we fall before thy face, Our only refuge is thy grace; No outward forms can make us clean, The leprosy lies deep within.
JESUS, our GOD, thy blood alone Hath power sufficient to atone; LORD, let us hear thy pard’ning voice, And make our downcast hearts rejoice.
