When we see the high-priest and the elders of Israel putting their hands upon the scape-goat, and transferring to him all the sins of the whole congregation of Israel, that they might be carried into the land of oblivion, then we behold the eflScacy of Christ's atonement. It is not to be imagined that the blood of bulls or of goats could take away sin — no : in every instance where the con- science of a sinner was really purged from guilt, the pardon was bestowed solely through " the blood of him, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God."
