← Gnomon of the New Testament — Volume 3

Matt, xviii. 24 ; 1 Tim. vi. 18. — asaurf) for thyself not for the other, whom thou judgest. — opyr\v — bpyqg, wrath — of wrath) The idea of A stubrr\g [vehemence] of language is here conveyed with great force. Why is it, that many have no sense of wrath? [Because] The day of wrath is not yet ; but it shall be. — sv rj/nspf).1 When h refers to time, it denotes the present ; tig, the future.2 3 * That day is present to God [therefore h i/Mpa, present, is used]. But this expression may also be construed with bpyi) v. [Beng. seems to have construed h ^'spa with ^cau^s/g]. — d^ozaXv^sug, of the revelation) When God shall be revealed, the secrets of man shall be revealed, ver. 16. — zai dizaiozpiciag). By far the greatest weight of testimony, and the unquestionable antithesis between dvoyfg and a^ozaXv^sug, which is most worthy of the apostle (such as there is also between duoyfu and suds i%iv, ch. iii. 26; Ps. 1. 21), confirm the reading of the particle xa/9 ver. 4, rr\g xpqffrorqrog, zai rrig duoyfg^ zai ry\g (Jjazpo^^iag' ver. 5, bpyqg zai dffozaXv^swg, zai brzaiozptGtag.5 ’A uoyf and u'lrbzdXv-^ig have respect to God, and are compared together, as dvoyf and svbsfyg are at ch. iii. 25 ; [iazpo6vpta and dtzatozptcia refer to the sinner, ypTjffroryig and hpyv\ are put generally. Wherefore the particle zai should not have been admitted, as it is by some ; it is sup- ported also by Origen, in his work against Celsus, in the MS. at Bale, as Sam. Battier informs us in his Biblioth. Brem., Class vi., p. 98. Instead of d^ozaXd^sug the Alex. MS. has durano- doffsag. I formerly omitted to notice this various reading, which arose from its having the same letters at the beginning as the verb anobuiffsi, and is quite out of place here ; nor do I use it now to defend that zai which follows immediately after. Eras- mus observes, that btzaiozpnriag , was a wTord newly coined to express a thing not formerly known among [acknowledged on the part of] men.
