8. Ovx si dorse dyarrdrs) Ye love , although ye know Him not in person. A paradox : for in other cases it is knowledge which produces love. This is said respecting love : Peter afterwards asserts the same respecting faith. Whom and in whom ; the absence of the copula resembles Anaphora.1 2 — sig ov, in whom) The word in properly belongs to believing , as does also now. — /Mrt opuvrsg, not see- ing) The present : that is, although you see Him not as yet in glory. The apostles, who had seen Him themselves, thought that their faith was not so great as that of others. — avsxXaXrjrujj unspeak- able) even now : 1 Cor. ii. 9. — xa i dsdoZaff/Ysvri, and glorified) This joy is glorified in itself, and glorified by witnesses. Comp. ver. 10. In other respects it is unspeakable.

Us pi r\g tdTvpiag, of which salvation) A great argument for the truth arises from the prophecies and eagerness of the prophets. — B%e%qrij<rav xai s^rjpsvvrjffav, inquired and searched diligently) There is great emphasis in the two compound words, ixfyrs/v, to seek out , to attain to by seeking : sfypsuvuvj to search through , to attain to by searching. The simple word spsvmvrsg , searching , occurs in ver. 11. What they attained to by inquiring and searching, is expressed and defined in ver. 12. ’Epsuvuvrsg, searching , refers to the first and principal searching respecting Christ Himself : s^s^ryiffav xai s&psv- vyffuv, they inquired and searched diligently , to a further and more advanced searching respecting Christians. — T^o^ra/, prophets) with the other righteous men : Matt. xiii. 17 ; John viii. 56. The omission of the article gives weight to the sentence, as is often the case with the Germans : for it has the effect of calling away the
