abject spirit, shown in the three par- ticulars of λοιδορούμενοι . . . παρα- καλοῦμεν: ‘id mundus spretum putat” (6.).--λοιδορ. (reviled to our faces) im- plies insulting abuse, δυσφημούμενοι (defamed) injurious abuse: for the former, cf. τ Peter ii. 23.---διωκόµενοι ἀνεχόμεθα, “persecuted, we bear with (lit. put-up with) it” —implying patience, while tpo- µένω (xiii. 7, etc.) implies courage in the sufferer.
