Matthew Henry was an English Presbyterian and Nonconformist minister whose name became inseparable from one of the most enduring devotional commentaries in the English language. Born in 1662, he grew up in a family shaped by the pressures placed on ministers who would not conform to the restored Church of England after 1662.
Henry pastored in Chester and later in Hackney. His Exposition of the Old and New Testaments was written for pastors, families and serious readers rather than as a purely technical academic work. That pastoral purpose explains its characteristic mixture of explanation, theological reflection and practical application.
Henry died in 1714 before finishing the entire New Testament. His own published work reached through Acts; ministers who knew him completed the remaining books from his notes and papers. The completed commentary became extraordinarily influential across Protestant traditions and is still quoted in sermons and Bible studies today.
