When God Seems Quiet

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. — Psalm 37:7

There are seasons when prayer feels like a conversation in which only one person is talking. You pray about the same situation day after day and nothing appears to move. No answer arrives. No door opens. No feeling of certainty comes. People may tell you to just have faith, but you already are having faith. That is why you keep praying. The silence is hard precisely because you believe God is there.

The Bible does not hide these seasons. David asked how long God would forget him. Job wanted answers he could not get. Habakkuk looked at injustice and asked why God seemed to tolerate it. Even faithful people have looked toward heaven and wondered what was happening. Honest questions are not proof that faith is gone. Sometimes they are proof that faith is refusing to walk away.

We often want God to explain the whole plan while we are standing in the middle of it. Usually He does not. Most of us can look backward and understand things we could not understand while they were happening. A delay protected us. A closed door redirected us. A hard season changed something in us we did not know needed changing. That does not make every painful event easy to explain, but it reminds us that our current view is not the whole view.

Silence is also not the same as absence. A teacher can be quiet during a test and still be in the room. A parent can watch a child struggle with a difficult task without abandoning the child. God can be present in ways we do not feel. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable reporters of God's location.

What do we do while we wait? We keep doing the last clear thing God gave us to do. We tell the truth. We go to work. We care for our family. We pray. We read Scripture. We stay connected to people who strengthen our faith. Waiting can tempt us to put life on hold until one specific prayer is answered. But there is still obedience available today.

There may also be an answer we do not want to hear. Sometimes God's no feels like silence because we keep waiting for Him to change it into yes. Wisdom includes leaving room for the possibility that God is protecting us from something we are convinced we need. That can be painful. Surrender is not giving up on God. It is trusting Him enough to let His answer be better than ours.

If you are tired of praying about the same thing, simplify the prayer. 'Lord, You know.' That is enough sometimes. You do not have to find new words every day. Sit with Him. Tell Him you are frustrated. Ask for strength for today instead of a map of the next five years. God is not grading the eloquence of your prayer.

One day the silence may make sense. It may not. There are questions some of us will carry all the way to heaven. But we can still decide who God is while we wait. He was faithful before this unanswered prayer, and He has not changed. Stay close. Keep talking to Him. Quiet does not mean gone.
