DAILY DEVOTIONAL
When You Don't Know How to Pray
The Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. — Romans 8:26
There are times when prayer comes easily. Words pour out and you know exactly what you want to say. Then there are days when you sit down to pray and your mind feels empty. Maybe the situation is too complicated. Maybe you are too tired. Maybe the pain is too deep to turn into sentences. Scripture has room for that kind of prayer too.
Romans says the Spirit helps us in our weakness. That means weakness is not a barrier God is waiting for us to overcome before He listens. Sometimes a sigh is prayer. Tears can be prayer. Sitting quietly before God because you have no idea what to ask for can still be prayer. He understands more than the words we manage to produce.
We can make prayer harder than it needs to be by trying to sound spiritual. God is not impressed by vocabulary. Jesus warned against empty repetition meant to create an appearance of devotion. Talk to God like He already knows you, because He does. Tell Him what happened. Tell Him what you are afraid of. Tell Him where you are angry. Honesty is a better starting place than performance.
When you truly do not know what to ask, borrow words from Scripture. Pray a Psalm. Pray the Lord's Prayer slowly. Take one verse and turn it into your own request. 'Give us this day our daily bread' can become a prayer about a job, a bill, strength, food, or whatever today's need actually is.
Prayer is also more than asking for things. Sometimes we need to sit in God's presence without presenting a list. Thank Him. Confess something. Remember a time He was faithful. Ask what needs to change in you, not only what needs to change around you. The relationship gets deeper when prayer becomes more than emergency requests.
Do not measure prayer only by emotion. Some days you will feel close to God. Some days you will not. A marriage is not real only when both people feel romantic, and prayer is not real only when it feels powerful. Showing up matters. Faithfulness builds a life with God over time.
If you have stopped praying because you were disappointed, tell Him that too. You are not protecting God from your frustration by staying silent. He already knows. The Psalms are full of people bringing disappointment directly to Him. A strained conversation is still a conversation. Silence born from hurt can become distance if we let it.
So pray today, even if the prayer is short. 'Help me.' 'Forgive me.' 'Thank You.' 'I do not know what to do.' 'Please stay close.' Heaven does not require a speech. God hears the heart behind the words, and according to Romans, even when there are no words at all, we are not praying alone.
