CHRISTIAN DIFFERENCES

Communion / Eucharist

Christians agree that Jesus gave the church a meal centered on His body and blood and commanded remembrance. They disagree sharply about how Christ is present and what the meal does.

Catholic teaching speaks of transubstantiation; Orthodox theology strongly affirms the real mystery of Christ’s presence without using the same scholastic definition; Lutheran teaching affirms a real sacramental presence; Reformed traditions often speak of a real spiritual participation; many Baptists and evangelicals emphasize memorial remembrance. Each view tries to account for Jesus’ words, Paul’s warnings, and historic worship.
