What happened?

Emperor Decius required inhabitants of the empire to perform acts of sacrifice, producing a major crisis for Christians who refused and for churches dealing afterward with those who complied.

Why it matters

The crisis intensified debates over martyrdom, apostasy, repentance and restoration.
