Neronian persecution after the fire of Rome

What happened?

After the great fire of Rome, Nero blamed Christians and subjected some to brutal punishment. Later Christian tradition connects the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul with Rome in this general period.

Why it matters

This is one of the earliest clear Roman persecutions of Christians and shaped Christian memory of martyrdom.
