First Council of Nicaea

What happened?

Called by Constantine, bishops met at Nicaea to address the Arian controversy, the relationship of the Son to the Father, and other church disputes.

Why it matters

The Nicene Creed’s confession that the Son is of one essence with the Father became foundational to later Trinitarian orthodoxy.
