What happened?

Parliament prohibited the British transatlantic slave trade after decades of abolitionist campaigning involving Black activists, Quakers, evangelicals, politicians and public organizers.

Why it matters

The victory marked a major stage in the longer struggle against slavery, though slavery itself continued in much of the empire until the 1830s.
