Born in North Africa, Augustine moved through Manichaeism, philosophy and a long intellectual and moral search before his Christian conversion and baptism. As bishop of Hippo he wrote Confessions, City of God, On the Trinity, sermons, letters and extensive biblical works.
Few Christian writers have influenced Western thought more deeply on grace, sin, church, sacraments, history, desire, memory and the interpretation of Scripture.
His views developed over time, and later Catholic, Protestant and secular thinkers have appropriated different parts of his enormous body of work.
