Late Medieval • Bohemian Reform

Jan Hus

c. 1372 – 1415 • Preacher, reformer and martyr

Life and setting

Hus preached reform in Prague, criticized abuses in church leadership and drew on some Wycliffite ideas while developing his own program. Condemned at the Council of Constance, he was executed in 1415.

Why this person matters

His death intensified Bohemian reform movements and made him an important predecessor to the sixteenth-century Reformation.

What should not be sanitized

The relationship between Hus and Wycliffe was more selective than polemical opponents sometimes claimed.
