Bunyan was a Bedford tinker and Nonconformist preacher who spent years imprisoned for unlicensed preaching after the Restoration. He wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress, Grace Abounding and many other works.
The Pilgrim’s Progress became one of the most widely read Christian allegories in English and shaped evangelical spirituality across traditions.
Labels such as Baptist and Puritan overlap imperfectly in Bunyan’s case; his congregation practiced a broad open-communion Nonconformity.
