Luther’s challenge to indulgence preaching in 1517 expanded into a broad dispute about authority, justification, sacraments and church reform. He translated the Bible into influential German and produced sermons, catechisms, hymns and theological works.
His emphasis on justification by faith and Scripture’s authority became central to Protestant traditions and transformed European Christianity.
His later anti-Jewish writings are severe and harmful, and his stance during the Peasants’ War remains heavily criticized.
