Proverbs 18:17 presents a principle about testimony and judgment: the first account often appears convincing until another person examines it. The proverb does not accuse every first speaker of lying, nor does it say that the second account is automatically correct. Its point is that an initial presentation can seem complete because listeners have not yet heard the matter questioned, clarified, or placed in a wider setting. That wisdom is especially important when readers encounter an apparent contradiction between biblical passages.

Different Details Need Comparison
Primary passage: Matthew 28:2
Matthew 28:2 reports a dramatic event at the tomb: an earthquake occurred, an angel descended, rolled away the stone, and sat upon it. The verse is part of Matthew’s resurrection narrative, where the women come to the tomb and encounter signs that the crucified Jesus is no longer there. Matthew is not attempting to list every detail that another Gospel writer might include. He presents the features that serve his account of the angelic announcement and the empty tomb.
Psalm 114:4 says that the mountains skipped like rams and the hills like lambs. Read as ordinary scientific description, the statement sounds impossible; read as Hebrew poetry, it is vivid personification that portrays creation responding to the Lord’s saving presence. The verse belongs to a song celebrating the exodus of Israel from Egypt and the crossing of the sea and Jordan. Its purpose is worshipful recollection, not a measured report of geological movement.
LESSON 4
Some Passages Are Difficult
Primary passage: 2 Peter 3:16
In 2 Peter 3:16, the writer refers to Paul’s letters and acknowledges that they contain matters “hard to be understood.” The verse appears near the conclusion of a letter addressing the Lord’s coming, the patience of God, and the danger of scoffers. Peter does not treat difficulty itself as evidence that Paul’s teaching is false. Instead, he warns that ignorant and unstable people distort difficult material, just as they distort the rest of the Scriptures, with destructive consequences.
