Prayer: Learning to Pray Biblically

Jesus’ teaching, the Psalms, persistence, intercession, thanksgiving, lament, and prayer in suffering.

Course Outline

LESSON 1

Jesus Teaches Prayer

Primary passage: Matthew 6:5-15

Jesus warns against prayer performed for admiration and teaches a God-centered pattern beginning with God’s name, kingdom, and will.

LESSON 2

Praying the Psalms

Primary passage: Psalm 13:1-6

The Psalms teach that faithful prayer can include grief, protest, remembrance, petition, trust, and praise. Lament brings distress to God rather than hiding it.

LESSON 3

Persistence and Intercession

Primary passage: Luke 11:1-13

Jesus encourages persistence rooted in confidence in the Father. Paul’s prayers show concern for spiritual strength, love, wisdom, and perseverance.

LESSON 4

Prayer in Suffering

Primary passage: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Paul repeatedly asks for his thorn to be removed, yet the reported answer is sufficient grace rather than removal. Sincere prayer is not a guarantee of the exact requested outcome.
