Colossians 1:15 stands at the beginning of a poetic section that presents the greatness of Jesus Christ. Paul writes to believers in Colossae whose faith is being shaped by competing ideas about spiritual maturity, human tradition, and unseen powers. Before the verse explains what Christ does, it identifies who he is. The description is therefore not a decorative statement about Jesus; it establishes the foundation for the entire letter’s teaching about salvation, wisdom, worship, and Christian conduct.
Colossians 1:20 belongs to a concentrated description of Christ’s work. After declaring Christ’s supremacy over creation and the church, Paul explains that God’s fullness dwells in him and that God acts through him to reconcile all things. The verse therefore joins Christology and salvation: the one who stands above creation is also the one through whom God makes peace. Reconciliation is not treated as an independent religious idea but as the work of the crucified Christ.

Now he directs attention toward the risen Christ and the realm of God’s purposes, where the believer’s life is said to be hidden with Christ.

Colossians 3:12 begins a section describing the community life that should follow the believer’s new identity in Christ. Their conduct is not a way to purchase that identity; it is the fitting expression of an identity received through Christ.
