Galatians 5:22 appears in a section where Paul contrasts life shaped by the flesh with life shaped by the Spirit. The churches in Galatia were being urged to understand the gospel rightly, including the place of faith, freedom, and obedience. Paul does not present Christian character as a set of achievements by which people earn acceptance with God. Instead, he names the kind of life that the Spirit produces in those who belong to Christ.
Galatians 5:16 introduces Paul’s practical answer to a serious question: how should people who have been set free in Christ live? The verse comes after Paul has warned the Galatians not to turn freedom into an excuse for self-serving behavior. He tells them to walk in the Spirit, adding that they will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. The command is therefore about a whole direction of life, not a single emotional experience or occasional religious effort.
First Corinthians 13:4 belongs to Paul’s correction of a divided church. The Corinthians valued spiritual gifts, but their use of those gifts had become entangled with rivalry, status, and disorder. Paul places the famous teaching on love between his discussion of gifts and his comparison of temporary gifts with what endures. The verse is therefore not a detached description for weddings alone; it addresses how Christians use power, knowledge, speech, and ministry among one another.
