Matthew 1:23 appears within the opening chapter of the Gospel, where Matthew introduces Jesus through a genealogy and then explains Joseph’s discovery that Mary is pregnant before their marriage. Joseph plans to end the relationship quietly, but an angel tells him that the child has been conceived by the Holy Spirit and that he must name the child Jesus. The quotation in verse 23 comes from Isaiah and interprets the significance of the birth: this child will be called Emmanuel, a name Matthew translates as “God with us.” The verse therefore does more than provide a title; it tells readers how to understand the person whose story follows.
Matthew 5:3 opens the Sermon on the Mount, a sustained section in which Jesus teaches his disciples before the gathered crowds. He begins with a series of blessings commonly called the Beatitudes. The first blessing is addressed to “the poor in spirit,” and Jesus declares that the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. The statement is brief, but its position matters: Matthew presents kingdom life not as a program for impressive people but as a summons that begins with recognizing one’s spiritual need before God.
Matthew 16:16 records Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question about his identity. The conversation takes place after Jesus has taught, healed, and confronted misunderstanding among both crowds and religious leaders. He first asks what people are saying about him, and the disciples report several prophetic identifications. Jesus then makes the question personal: who do the disciples say that he is? Simon Peter responds that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Matthew 28:19 belongs to the final encounter between the risen Jesus and his disciples. The women have found the empty tomb and reported the message, and the disciples meet Jesus in Galilee as he directed. Some worship, though Matthew also notes that some doubt, presenting the mission in the midst of a real human response rather than an idealized scene. Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and earth has been given to him, then commissions his followers to go, make disciples among all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything he has commanded.
