Old Testament: The Story from Creation to Hope

Creation, covenant, exodus, kingdom, exile, wisdom, prophets, and the Old Testament hope that prepares the way for the New Testament.

Course Outline

LESSON 1

Creation, Fall, and Promise

Primary passage: Genesis 1-3

Genesis begins with God as Creator and with human beings bearing God’s image. The opening chapters establish themes of dignity, vocation, worship, stewardship, marriage, sin, judgment, mercy, and exile.

LESSON 2

Covenant, Exodus, and the Law

Primary passage: Exodus 19:1-20:21

God’s call of Abraham begins a covenant family through whom blessing is promised to the nations. Exodus then tells of Israel’s deliverance from slavery and formation as a covenant people.

LESSON 3

Kings, Wisdom, and Exile

Primary passage: 2 Samuel 7:1-17

Israel’s monarchy brings both promise and failure. David receives a dynastic promise, while later kings repeatedly expose the danger of power without faithfulness.

LESSON 4

Prophets and the Hope of Restoration

Primary passage: Jeremiah 31:31-34

The prophets confront idolatry, oppression, false worship, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness. Their message is not merely prediction; it calls people back to God and interprets the meaning of historical crisis.
