Acts 9 places Saul on the road to Damascus, traveling with authority to oppose the disciples of Jesus. The narrative has already identified him as a severe persecutor, and the sudden heavenly interruption exposes the spiritual meaning of his violence. Saul falls to the ground and hears a voice address him by name: “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” The verse does not give every detail of his conversion, but it records the decisive confrontation that changes the direction of his life.
Acts 13 records Paul and Barnabas speaking in the synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia. They proclaim God’s promises, Jesus’ death and resurrection, and forgiveness through him, while also warning their hearers not to reject God’s work. Some respond with faith, but opposition develops when large crowds gather the next Sabbath. In that setting, Paul and Barnabas turn toward the Gentiles and cite the Lord’s command that God’s servant should be a light to the nations.
Second Corinthians 12 comes near the end of Paul’s defense of his apostolic ministry. He has been compelled to answer comparisons and boasts, yet he does not present visions or achievements as grounds for superiority. Instead, he speaks of a persistent affliction, described as a “thorn in the flesh,” and says that he pleaded with the Lord three times for its removal. The exact nature of the thorn is not identified, so responsible interpretation should resist confident claims about a diagnosis or specific circumstance.
Second Timothy 4 presents Paul near the close of his ministry, charging Timothy to preach the word with patience and persistence. He warns that some will resist sound teaching and urges Timothy to remain watchful and endure hardship. Paul then speaks personally, using three images: a fight fought well, a race completed, and the faith kept. Acts does not supply every circumstance behind this letter, and debates about its composition should not distract from the passage’s pastoral purpose: a servant of Christ must remain faithful when the work is difficult and the future uncertain.
