Romans: Gospel, Grace, and Christian Life

Paul’s argument from universal sin to justification, union with Christ, the Spirit, God’s faithfulness, and transformed living.

Course Outline

LESSON 1

The Human Problem

Primary passage: Romans 1:18-3:20

Paul levels both Gentile and Jewish boasting. Possessing law or comparing ourselves with others cannot establish righteousness before God.

LESSON 2

Justification and Peace

Primary passage: Romans 3:21-5:11

Paul announces righteousness from God apart from law-keeping as the ground of boasting. Romans 5 joins justification to peace and hope.

LESSON 3

Union and Spirit

Primary passage: Romans 6:1-8:39

Grace does not make sin irrelevant. Paul grounds new life in union with Christ and develops life in the Spirit, adoption, suffering, hope, and God’s love.

LESSON 4

Faithfulness and Living Sacrifice

Primary passage: Romans 9:1-12:21

Romans 9–11 wrestles with Israel and God’s faithfulness. Romans 12 turns theology toward worship, humility, gifts, love, and enemy-love.
