MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 4 · UNIT 2 OF 4

The Cross in Multiple Images

Study passage: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.

Teaching and interpretation

New Testament writers speak of reconciliation, sacrifice, victory, ransom and love when describing Jesus' death. Each image highlights an aspect of a larger argument. Study Paul's call to reconciliation in its letter context rather than making one metaphor do all the theological work. Historical atonement models help organize questions, but they should be identified as models rather than verbatim biblical sentences.

Pastoral case to discuss

A listener has been told that God values suffering for its own sake. How can a minister discuss the cross while opposing abuse and cruelty?

Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.

Required practical exercise

Outline two biblical images of the cross, their contexts and one misunderstanding each could invite.

Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
