MINISTRY TRAINING · MODULE 2 · UNIT 2 OF 4
Exodus, Law and Justice
Study passage: Exodus 20:1-17. Read the whole surrounding chapter before relying on this unit.
Teaching and interpretation
The Ten Commandments appear in a story of deliverance and a people learning how to live together. Examine how covenant, worship, rest, family, property and truth are related. A minister must not casually transplant every ancient legal penalty into contemporary civil policy. Distinguish descriptive ancient law, Christian moral reasoning and decisions governed by modern law.
Pastoral case to discuss
A congregation member uses a ritual or civil regulation from Exodus to intimidate a family. Which interpretive and pastoral questions must come first?
Describe the relevant facts and what you would still need to know. Do not present assumptions as the person's motives, diagnose a disorder or make unverified claims about Scripture.
Required practical exercise
Write a 450-word summary of the commandment's historical setting and an application that avoids coercion.
Support your answers with passages in context and distinguish biblical teaching, historical interpretation, modern professional standards and personal judgment. Keep real people's details confidential.
