2 Samuel 16:20Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give me counsel. What should we do?”2 Samuel 17:1Furthermore, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.2 Samuel 17:2I will attack him while he is weak and weary; I will throw him into a panic, and all the people with him will flee; I will strike down only the king2 Samuel 17:3and bring all the people back to you as a bride returning to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”2 Samuel 17:4This proposal seemed good to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.2 Samuel 17:5Then Absalom said, “Summon Hushai the Archite as well, and let us hear what he too has to say.”2 Samuel 17:6So Hushai came to Absalom, who told him, “Ahithophel has spoken this proposal. Should we carry it out? If not, what do you say?”2 Samuel 17:7Hushai replied, “This time the advice of Ahithophel is not sound.”2 Samuel 17:8He continued, “You know your father and his men. They are mighty men, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Moreover, your father is a man of war who will not spend the night with the troops.2 Samuel 17:9Surely by now he is hiding in a cave or some other location. If some of your troops fall first, whoever hears of it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’2 Samuel 17:10Then even the most valiant soldier with the heart of a lion will melt with fear, because all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man who has valiant men with him.2 Samuel 17:11Instead, I advise that all Israel from Dan to Beersheba—a multitude like the sand on the seashore—be gathered to you, and that you yourself lead them into battle.2 Samuel 17:12Then we will attack David wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like dew on the ground. And of all the men with him, not even one will remain.2 Samuel 17:13If he retreats to a city, all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley until not even a pebble can be found there.”2 Samuel 17:14Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the LORD had purposed to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.2 Samuel 17:15So Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “This is what Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I have advised.Acts 15:1Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”Acts 15:2And after engaging these men in sharp debate, Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.Acts 15:3Sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, recounting the conversion of the Gentiles and bringing great joy to all the brothers.Acts 15:4On their arrival in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and apostles and elders, to whom they reported all that God had done through them.Acts 15:5But some believers from the party of the Pharisees stood up and declared, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.”Acts 15:6So the apostles and elders met to look into this matter.Acts 15:7After much discussion, Peter got up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you that the Gentiles would hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.Acts 15:8And God, who knows the heart, showed His approval by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as He did to us.Acts 15:9He made no distinction between us and them, for He cleansed their hearts by faith.Acts 15:10Now then, why do you test God by placing on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?Acts 15:11On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”Acts 15:12The whole assembly fell silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.Acts 15:13When they had finished speaking, James declared, “Brothers, listen to me!Acts 15:14Simon has told us how God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a people to be His own.Acts 15:15The words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written:Acts 15:16‘After this I will return and rebuild the fallen tent of David. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,Acts 15:17so that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name, says the Lord who does these thingsActs 15:18that have been known for ages.’Acts 15:19It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not cause trouble for the Gentiles who are turning to God.Acts 15:20Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood.Acts 15:21For Moses has been proclaimed in every city from ancient times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”Acts 15:22Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to select men from among them to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, two leaders among the brothers,Acts 15:23and sent them with this letter: The apostles and the elders, your brothers, To the brothers among the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings.Acts 15:24It has come to our attention that some went out from us without our authorization and unsettled you, troubling your minds by what they said.Acts 15:25So we all agreed to choose men to send to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,Acts 15:26men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.Acts 15:27Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to tell you in person the same things we are writing.Acts 15:28It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond these essential requirements:Acts 15:29You must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.
