Genesis 3:1Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. Then I would be revealed to him as a deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a curse rather than a blessing.”Genesis 27:13His mother replied, “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”Genesis 27:14So Jacob went and got two goats and brought them to his mother, who made the tasty food his father loved.Genesis 27:15And Rebekah took the finest clothes in the house that belonged to her older son Esau, and she put them on her younger son Jacob.Genesis 27:16She also put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.Genesis 27:17Then she handed her son Jacob the tasty food and bread she had made.Genesis 27:18So Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.” “Here I am!” he answered. “Which one are you, my son?”Genesis 27:19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may bless me.”Genesis 27:20But Isaac asked his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?” “Because the LORD your God brought it to me,” he replied.Genesis 27:21Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau, or not?”Genesis 27:22So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”Genesis 27:23Isaac did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.Genesis 27:24Again he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”Genesis 27:25“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he ate; then he brought him wine, and he drank.Genesis 27:26Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.”Genesis 27:27So he came near and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed him and said: “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.Genesis 27:28May God give to you the dew of heaven and the richness of the earth—an abundance of grain and new wine.Genesis 27:29May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”Genesis 30:31“What can I give you?” Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on shepherding and keeping your flocks.Genesis 30:32Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every spotted or speckled goat. These will be my wages.Genesis 30:33So my honesty will testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered stolen.”Genesis 30:34“Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”Genesis 30:35That very day Laban removed all the streaked or spotted male goats and every speckled or spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.Genesis 30:36Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flocks.Genesis 30:37Jacob, however, took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled the bark, exposing the white inner wood of the branches.Genesis 30:38Then he set the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,Genesis 30:39they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.Genesis 30:40Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the streaked dark-colored sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with Laban’s animals.Genesis 30:41Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.Genesis 30:42But if the animals were weak, he did not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.Genesis 30:43Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.Joshua 9:3But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,Joshua 9:4acted deceptively and set out as envoys, carrying on their donkeys worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.Joshua 9:5They put worn, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies, and their whole supply of bread was dry and moldy.Joshua 9:6They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”Joshua 9:7But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?”Joshua 9:9“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,Joshua 9:10and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.Joshua 9:11So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’Joshua 9:12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But look, it is now dry and moldy.Joshua 9:13These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked.
