Mark 12:38In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,Mark 12:39and to have the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.Mark 12:40They defraud widows of their houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will receive greater condemnation.”Mark 12:41As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.Luke 1:14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,Luke 1:15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall never take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.Luke 1:16Many of the sons of Israel he will turn back to the Lord their God.Luke 1:17And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”Luke 1:18“How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”Luke 1:19“I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.Luke 1:20And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”Luke 1:21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.Luke 1:22When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.Luke 1:23And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.Luke 2:21When the eight days before His circumcision had passed, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.Luke 2:22And when the time of purification according to the Law of Moses was complete, His parents brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the LordLuke 2:23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord”),Luke 2:24and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”Luke 2:25Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.Luke 2:26The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.Luke 2:27Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. She had been married for seven years,Luke 2:37and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four.
