Another feature that strikes us in the structure of clauses in the OT presents itself in ‘I am the Lorp thy God which have brought,’ ete. (Ex 20?), Other examples of the same fashion are Dt 53> (‘all of ws’)®, Jg 134 (‘the man that speakest as 18 25% (‘and thou which hast’), Ps 712 (‘thou which hast’), Neh 97 (‘thou art the God who didst’), 1 Ch 21" (J it is that have sinned’).
2. It requires no great acquaintance with the language of Scripture to enable one to recall such forms of expression as the following : ‘J oseph was the son of his old age’ (Gn 37°), i.e. he was born when Jacob was advanced in years, forming thus a contrast to the ‘children of youth,’ 7.e. children begotten by a man at the period of his full streneth (Ps 1274, ef. Gn 49%), Where we now find in the EV the expressions ‘son(s) of’ or ‘children of,’ the Hebrew is 732 or 33, and their use constitutes such a characteristic feature of the style of Serip- ture that it deserves somewhat fuller illustration. —(a) The *3 (den-) is sometimes retained in the EV: ¢.g. Ben-ammi (Gn 19°8), de. ‘belonging to my people’; Ben-oni (3518), de. ‘born in m sorrow’; Boanerges (Mk 3"), i.c. ‘sons of thunder.’ Seven proper names show the Aramaic form of ben-, namely bar-: Bartholomew (Mt 10°), Bar- jonah (16"), Barabbas (27'°), Bartimzeus (Mk 10%), Barsabbas (Ac 123), Barnabas (4°°), Barjesus (13°),— (8) 2 or 32 are reproduced by ‘son(s) of’ or ¢ chil- dren of’ in the following expressions : ‘son of his old age’ (Gn 37); ‘thy mother’s sons,’ or the like, z.e. brothers who have not only the same father but the same mother (Gn 27%, J g 8 Ps 50”, Ca 1°); ‘children of his people’ (Nu 22°) ; ‘ chil- dren of Sheth’ (24!7), i.e. friends of war tumult [according to Sayce, Expos. Times, xiii. 64>, the *Sutu], at least Jeremiah in the parallel passage (48°) speaks of ‘sons of tumult’ (béné sh@dn) ; ‘children (son, sons) of Belial’ (Dt 13% [RV ‘base fellows’), Jg 1972 20! 1 S§ 912 1027 25", 1 K Q]10- 18, 2Ch 13°), tc. worthless persons (cf. Lhis characteristic of Scripture style attains all the greater prominence because the same derived usage is frequently met with in the case of the term ‘daughter.’ For instance, ‘daughters of Heth’ stands for Hittite women (Gn 27%). The same usage appears in 281-8, Nu 251, Je 11; ‘the daughters of Shiloh’ (Jg 21?!) ; ‘daughters of Dan’ (2 Ch 2) ; ‘daughter of Tyre’ (Ps 45”) =< princess of Tyre’; ‘daughters of Judah,’ ete.
