17. People (Aaod). Restricted in the Acts to the people of Israel.
18. Suffered he their manners (étporopdpycev). From tpotros, fashion or manner, and dopéw, to bear or suffer. The preferable reading, however, is érpofodopynoev ; from tpodés, a nurse; and the figure is explained by, and probably was drawn from, Dent. i.31. The American revisers properly insist on the rendering, as a nursing-father bare he them.
19. Divided by lot (xatexdrnpovounoev). The A. V. gives the literal rendering. The Rev., gave them their land for an inheritance, is correct, so far as the meaning inheritance is concerned (see on 1 Pet. i. 4), but does not give the sense of distribution which is contained in the word.
24. Before his coming (po mpocw@rov Ths eicddou avrod). Lit., before the face of his entrance. A Hebrew form of expres- sion.
25. Think ye (izovoeire). Originally, to think secretly: hence to suspect, conjecture.
26. To you. The best texts read Zo us.
33. Hath fulfilled (éx7remAnjpaxe). Completely fulfilled ; force of éx, out and out.

34. The sure mercies (ra dcva ta miata). Lit., the holy things, the sure. Rev., the holy and sure blessings.
35. Suffer (dace). Lit., give.
36. Was laid unto (zpoceré9n). Lit., was added unto. Com- pare chil, 4(c5v- 14.
41. Perish (adavic9nre). Lit., vanish.
Declare (éxdimyjra). Only here and ch. xv. 3. See on shew, Luke viii. 89. The word is a very strong expression for the fullest and clearest declaration: declare throughout.
42. Next (uera&d). The word commonly means énterme- diate, and hence is explained by some as referring to the in- termediate week. But the meaning is fixed by ver. 44; and though the word does not occur in the New Testament else- where in the sense of newt, it has that meaning sometimes in later Greek.
43. Religious (ceBopuévwr). Lit., worshipping. Compare ver. 50 and ch. xvi. 14.
Proselytes (zpoondvtwv). Originally, one who arrives at a place; a@ stranger; thence of one who comes over to another faith.
45. Envy (Gov). Rev., jealousy. See on Jas. iii. 14.
46. Put (arwdJeicte). Not strong enough. Better, as Rev., thrust, denoting violent rejection.
Lo (idod). Marking a crisis.
50. Honorable (evoyruovas). See on Mark xv. 48. Women of rank, or, as Rev., of honorable estate.
Cu. XIV.] THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES. 519
Coasts (opiwv). Not a good rendering, because it implies merely a sea-coast; whereas the word is a general one for boundaries.
51. Shook off. See on Matt. x. 14. Dust. Seeon Luke x. 11.
CHAPTER XIV. 3. Long (ixcavov). See on Luke vii. 6. Abode. See on ch. xii. 19. Inthe Lord. Lit., wpon (él) the Lord: in reliance on him.
5. Assault (cpu). Too strong, as is also the Rev., onset. In case an actual assault had been made, it would have been absurd for Luke to tell us that “they were ware of it.” It is rather the purpose and intention of assault beginning to as- sume the character of a movement. See on Jas. iil. 4.
To stone. Paul says he was stoned once (2 Cor. xi. 25). This took place at Lystra (see ver. 19). ,
6. Were ware (cuvdovtes). Rev., became aware. See on considered, ch. xii. 12.
7. They preached the gospel (joav evayyedfouevor). The finite verb with the participle, denoting continuance. They prolonged their preaching for some time.
8. Impotent (4évvatos). The almost universal meaning of the word in the New Testament is 7mpossible (see Matt. xix. 26; Heb. vi. 4, etc.). The sense of weak or impotent occurs only here and Rom. xv. 1.
9. Heard (#xove). The force of the imperfect should be given here. He was hearing while Paul preached.
