Let him be unjust (advcnodtw). The verb means to do wickedly. Hence Rev., correctly, let him do unrighteousness.
He which is filthy (0 pure@v). Only here in the New Testa- ment. On the kindred noun fvzros jilth, see on 1 Pet. iii. 21. “Purapia jilthiness occurs only in Jas. i. 215; and the adjective putrapés filthy, only in Jas. ii. 2.
Let him be filthy (év7@cdrw). The best texts read pumav- Sito let him be made filthy. So Rev.
Let him be righteous (ducavwdjtw). Read ducavocvvny mouncdte let him do righteousness. So Rev.
Let him be holy (ayiac3j7o). Rev., giving literally the force of the passive voice, let him be made holy.
12. My reward is with me (0 podds pou pet €uod). Muo- Sos reward is strictly wages. Compare Isa. xl. 10; Ixu. 11. See on 2 Pet. ii. 13.
To give (drododvat). Lit., to give back or in return for, thus appropriate to pucdes reward. Hence Rev., better, render. See on give an account, Luke xvi. 2; and gave, Acts iv. 33.
Shall be (cra). Read éotuyv zs.
14. That do His commandments (of zrovodv tes Tas EvToras airod). Read of mddvovtes Tas oTodas adtav they that wash their robes. Compare ch. vii. 14.
That they may have right to the tree of life (iva eoras 1 eLovcla abtav éml To Eddov THs Cwis). Lit., in order that theirs shall be authority over the tree of life. For é€ovcia right, authority, see on John i. 12. "Emit may be the preposition of direction: “may have right to come to” (so Rev.) or may be rendered over.
15. Dogs (oi xtves). The A.V. omits the article “the dogs.” Compare Philip. iii. 2. This was the term of reproach with
