Spurgeon became pastor of New Park Street Chapel in London as a young man and later preached at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. His sermons were printed weekly, and his ministry also supported a pastors’ college, orphanage and extensive charitable work.
His thousands of published sermons, books and devotionals made him one of the most widely read Protestant preachers of the nineteenth century.
His strong Calvinist Baptist convictions, public controversies and the later Down-Grade dispute are essential context for understanding his ministry.
