Talmud, The
Bibliography: Of the Mishna the first ed. was issued at Naples, 1492, with the (Hebr.) commentary of Maimonides; another ed. was that of Riva di Trento, 1559; and the latest that of Lowe named in the text. The first complete ed. of the Babylonian Talmud was that of Bomberg, Venice, 1520-23; others are Venice, 1531 and 1546-51; Lublin, 1559 sqq. (incomplete), 1617-39 (entire text); Basel, 1578-81 (censored); Cracow, 1602-05, 1616-20; Frankfort, 1697-99 and 1720-22 (the basis of most later eds.); Amsterdam, 1644-48 and 1714-19. Of modern editions those which are perhaps best worthy of note are : Berlin, 1862-68; Wilna, 1886 (the largest, with many aids to study); and the ed., with Germ, transl. and notes, by L. Goldschmidt, Berlin, 1896 sqq. (in progress vol. v., fasc. 1 issued Leipsic, 1910). Of the Palestinian Talmud the editio princeps is that of Venice, 1523 sqq.; later ones are Cracow, 1609; Krotoschin, 1866; Jitomir, 1860-67 (complete with commentary) ; and that of Piotrkow, 1898-1902. For other editions of both Talmuds cf. JE, xii. 23-24. Space can not be given here to editions of parts of the Talmud and of single tracts. A partial list is given in Hauck- Herzog, RE, xix. 315, and a further source for recent issues is the Schlagwort Katalog of C. Georg, Hanover, 1889-1909, under the caption " Talmud." There is an Eng. transl. of the Babylonian Talmud by M. L. Rodkinson, 10 vols., New York, finished 1906, but it is not altogether scholarly; a French transl. of the Palestinian Talmud is by M. Schwab, 11 vols., Paris, 1878-90, while a French transl. of the Babylonian was begun by J. de Pavly, Orleans, 1900; in German there are: A. Wunsche, Der Jerusalem.
